Hilber Nelson

Artist Statement:

Southern Idaho has been my home since 1992. I entered professional art school in my hometown of Seattle, WA after graduating from high school. I later attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Although I have been a professional illustrator, graphic designer, and advertising art director, working in Colorado and Minnesota.

I am a mental health therapist in the afternoons, so painting in the mornings in my home studio has become my therapy, a time for being in the moment, restoring, recharging, Audible books, Pandora Radio, and wine (after hours only). My studio is also a gathering place for family and painting with grandkids.

My works are inspired by mid-century modern art and design, for its zippy graphics and optimistic vibe. Each work is conceptualized on my iPad Pro using Procreate drawing program and Apple pencil. It’s a great way to pre-visualize a concept and avoid setbacks on canvas. I begin each work on canvas by laying down the core elements, just I did in Procreate. I really enjoy the process of building layers, colors, depth, and textures. Adding finishing touches is the most enjoyable and spontaneous part of the process.
