Kaci Shields

Biography:

Currently based in New York, Kaci is an artist creating large-scale,
mixed-media drawings and paintings.

Originally from Long Island, Kaci began oil painting at a young age.
Initially, she focused on traditional portraiture, but she has since
expanded into non-objective painting and a multitude of other mediums.
Her current studio practice is rooted in automatic drawings and free
association.

In 2018, she earned her BFA in interdisciplinary arts. Throughout her
education, she experimented with sculpture, printmaking, and
photography, incorporating elements from each into her painting
process. Her interests in art history, the occult, and philosophy,
along with her current work in human services, allows her interest in
people to prevail in many different forms.

Artist Statement:

I use art as a vehicle to experience the ambiguities of my identity
and release them to the contemporary.

Engaging with the raw and tactile materials of paint, pastels, and
charcoal, I build compositions that are both confrontational and
contemplative, which mirrors my process. Working on large surfaces, I
evoke a stream of consciousness to compose the foundation. This leads
to the initial confrontation that I navigate in spaces which retain a
density symptomatic of memory. I invite contemplation and achieve
balance with the addition of vibrant color and the openness of
negative space.

I come to my practice seeking release and a source of solitude. This
process is for me, and the work is a means of connection.
