Alex of Artexinia
Artist Biography / Artist Statement
My name is Alex Hirtl, also known as “Alex of Artexinia”. I live in Vienna, Austria. My soapstone sculptures, called “Artexinians”, represent individual characters with special abilities, and they are residents of the fictional “Art Republic of Artexinia”. They deal humorously and critically with the problems of our time, as well as the challenges of everyday life. Some have two faces, because many things in life have two different sides.
The “Artexinians” stand for peace, freedom, human rights, equality, climate protection, and humor. The sculptures and their stories invite viewers on a journey into the past and the future in order to better understand the present. On the margins of my artwork, there is plenty of room for laughter, wonder, and reflection.
