Daryl Perry

Daryl Perry Lo is a contemporary artist based in Wollongong, primarily creating large paintings in oil and acrylic on canvas and board. His expressive work occasionally ventures into the abstract, featuring active figures in natural settings, streetscapes, and employing continuous lines and vibrant colors. Lo's art resonates with echoes of Matisse, evident in his bold, saturated colors applied in generous layers, and nods to Basquiat through his frenetic line work and the vibrant energy of his portraits.

Born in Fiji and raised in Sydney, much of Lo's work is inspired by family and later evolves to explore themes of kinship, politics, war, and conflict. Paintings such as "The Spear Tackle" and "#9" depict men engaged in sports, a subject matter Lo uses to study human movement and the theme of competition.

Lo founded the after-school arts and sports center 'Squiggler Academy' for children in 2014 and, in collaboration with artists Orlando and Fleur Norrish, established the artist residency '130 Art Studios' in 2021. 130 Art Studios serves as a music venue, arts learning center, and gallery space with frequent exhibitions by resident, local, and guest artists. It has featured bands and works by artists like The Moving Stills, Ricky Albeck, and Keziah Sugarat, playing an increasingly significant role in advancing the Illawarra's vibrant contemporary arts scene. Lo holds an Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts (2021).
