Dr Shanali Perera
Artist Statement:
I am a self-taught contemporary artist, driven by abstract expressionism with figurative undertones. My work is deeply influenced by my journey living with vasculitis, an autoimmune illness that transformed my life and career. Through art, I express the complex emotions tied to pain, illness, and resilience, offering a visual narrative that resonates with universal human experiences.
My acrylic works, including One With Mess, capture the tension between chaos and calm, challenging perceptions of illness and identity. Using vibrant colors, layered textures, and energetic movement, I seek to convey the often invisible realities of living with a chronic condition while encouraging viewers to find strength and beauty in adversity.
My work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale’s PATH exhibit. I continue to explore themes of transformation, empowerment, and human connection through art.
