EJ Lee

Artist Biography / Artist Statement:

To read or not to read—that is the question. As a dyslexic artist, I ask viewers: what if English were viewed through a phonetic lens? This paradox reveals the language’s inconsistencies. English creates rules for spelling and grammar yet contradicts them with exceptions, combining elements from other languages in ways that confuse dyslexic individuals and non-native speakers.

My poems, written in phonetic English, challenge viewers to slow down and engage, reflecting my struggles with text. Patience becomes essential, as decoding the message leads to a deeper understanding of my emotions and art. So, slow down—sound it out.

EJ Lee is a mixed-media collage artist based in Baltimore, Maryland. She earned a BA in Studio Art (McDaniel College, 2015) and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art (Maine College of Art & Design, 2020).
