Artist Biography / Artist Statement

Mitra is a self-taught painter based in Washington, D.C., whose work explores the layered complexity of the human experience. She builds faces through colour, working in the traditions of Fauvism and Expressionism, where colour functions as a language.

Unlike many contemporary works that use facial fragmentation and distortion ironically, Mitra's paintings lean toward sincerity. Drawing inspiration from one of her favourite artists, Mark Rothko, she works with colour to investigate emotional states.
