Artist Statement

Painting is my way of making sense of the world. I think of my works as unfinished stories whose meaning shifts with time, inviting viewers to bring their own memories and experiences into each narrative. Working intuitively with acrylic, charcoal, and mixed media, I embrace an energetic and liberating process where structure and spontaneity coexist.

Across my bodies of work, I explore memory, identity, transformation, and the emotional landscapes that shape our shared humanity. I am drawn to what lies beneath the visible, capturing moments where abstraction and figuration meet, and where silence, movement, and emotion exist in transition.

Painting is both an act of discovery and reflection, a space where I can lose myself and find myself again. Through these open-ended narratives, I hope viewers encounter something deeply personal while discovering new connections to themselves and others.

Biography

Sweta Shah is an Indian American contemporary artist based in Vienna, Virginia, whose work moves between abstraction and narrative figuration. Working with acrylic, charcoal, and mixed media, she creates intuitive paintings exploring memory, identity, transformation, and shared emotional experience.

Shah has presented solo exhibitions including Thresholds and In Transition at Nepenthe Gallery, Echoes of the Unspoken at Waverly Street Gallery, and A Journey at Joan Hisaoka Gallery at Inova Schar Cancer Institute. Her work has appeared in more than 80 juried and invitational exhibitions and has received multiple Best in Show and Honorable Mention awards.

She was recognized by curator and critic Lenny Campello among the Top 400 Women Artists in the DMV. Her work has been featured by Artsy, The Washington Post, East City Art, and other publications and is held in private collections across the United States, Europe, India, and South Asia.
