Biography

TEON is the artistic name of Teodora Nikolova, a Bulgarian visual artist born in Blagoevgrad in 1981, working across painting, sculpture, and spatial installation. Her practice is rooted in a sustained investigation of the relationship between memory, the body, and matter — building layered, tactile surfaces from acrylic, structural paste, resin, gold leaf, clay, wire mesh, mirror, and sand, in which time accumulates and refuses to disappear.

At the centre of her current body of work is a precise and historically charged object: authentic pointe shoes, once worn by dancers of the National Opera and Ballet of Bulgaria, embedded into bronze sculptures and immersive spatial installations. The shoes carry within their material the trace of discipline, of effort, of a body pushed to its limit — transformed, through casting and construction, into fossils of presence: objects suspended between relic and monument, between what was and what remains.

Nikolova is self-taught. She built a career in business before dedicating herself fully to art in 2024. Within a short period, her practice has developed a significant international presence. In 2026, her work was presented at the 61st International Art Exhibition — La Biennale di Venezia, within the Grenada National Pavilion at Spazio Berlendis, and at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris. She received a Menzione di Merito from Progetto d'Autore 2026 at MAXXI — National Museum of 21st Century Arts, Rome, and her work was published in the Giunti Atlas of Contemporary Art. Her exhibition record includes presentations across Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Monaco, and Bulgaria. A solo exhibition is planned for 2027 at B² Atelier, Chelsea, London.

She lives and works in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Artist Statement

My work begins where language becomes insufficient — at the point where memory leaves its imprint on matter, and the body, even in its absence, continues to speak.

I work across painting, sculpture, and installation as a single continuous practice, in which acrylic, resin, structural paste, gold leaf, clay, wire mesh, mirror, and sand each carry their own register of meaning. My process is built on contrast: organic form against industrial structure, the visible against the concealed, permanence against erosion. Surfaces accumulate in layers — applied, scraped back, gilded, repeated — so that the finished work retains the history of its own making, in the way memory itself is built from accumulation and loss.

At the centre of my current research is a recurring object charged with bodily history: the pointe shoe. Not a symbol, but a record — worn, restored, and, most recently, cast in bronze. When I first held one of these shoes, I felt something I could not immediately explain. The shoe was empty, but it was not absent. Something remained inside it: the trace of a presence, the weight of years of discipline, the memory of a body that had moved through it again and again, until the material itself was marked.

This is what my work is about. Not the body itself, but what the body leaves behind. Not the moment, but what persists after the moment has passed. In the sculptures, the shoes are embedded directly into forms built from clay, wire mesh, structural paste, resin, and — most recently — bronze, set on mirrored bases. They double themselves, becoming both object and reflection, both presence and its echo.

I am interested in work that does not simply hang on a wall, but constructs an environment the viewer physically enters — and within which they encounter their own reflection, literally and otherwise. A constellation of shoes suspended in mid-air. A hand reaching toward a mirror set into sand on the floor. The boundary between artwork and viewer dissolves, and the work is no longer entirely mine.

My work is, ultimately, an invitation to contemplation: a space suspended between what is held and what has already slipped away, between the weight of time and the pull of the eternal. I do not give answers. I give surfaces. I trust the viewer to bring their own reasons.
